Adoption is the legal, permanent placement of a child with an adoptive parent. The adoptive parent can be an independent individual, or someone with ties to the child, such as a step-parent or grandparent. Adoption terminates a birth parent’s legal and parental rights and responsibilities for a child and places those rights and responsibilities with the adoptive parent. In some situations, an alternative to adoption, such as legal custody through Juvenile Court, a name change or a guardianship may be more appropriate.
